My Study of Imposter Syndrome: And How to Overcome It

Imposter Syndrome and the closely related Dunning-Kruger Effect are a persistent challenge for many people. Both have negative effects upon people’s lives and upon the businesses they work in. In this blog I will explain my current understanding of Imposter Syndrome.

You are not alone if you suffer from Imposter Syndrome! According to expert research: ‘Over 70% of people will suffer from imposter syndrome at some point during their lives.’ The syndrome is connected to a lack of confidence or belief in one’s own abilities. The origins of it are linked to experiences we have had in the past and each person is different in this respect.

Imposter syndrome is so related to confidence levels

It is interesting to study the levels of confidence in people in relation to ‘Imposter Syndrome’. This condition can affect people’s vision of themselves. There are proven techniques you can use to control your mind, to gain the confidence you lack.

I first came across ‘Imposter Syndrome’ when I spoke with Dona Sarkar of Microsoft, and subsequently Melissa Sassi of IBM. Both Dona and Melissa alerted me to this phenomenon in relation to their own lives.

The information I learned from my preliminary research into ‘Imposter Syndrome’ made me want to learn more about this important topic. I believe that many people suffer from it on a subconscious level.

I was guided towards the Executive Coach Kim Adele by one of my own mentors. We subsequently recorded an interview around this intriguing topic. At that stage my understanding was limited, and I subsequently realised that there was so much more to ‘Imposter Syndrome’ than I ever dreamed of.

Since meeting Kim-Adele she has actually overcome her imposter syndrome and we have managed to launch an Imposter Syndrome Training course which can be purchased here:

Responding to audience feedback, we decided to work with Kim as a Co-Host. We are now interviewing many sufferers of this syndrome and people who have helped others to overcome it. The series we will be releasing on ‘Imposter Syndrome’ will enable many people to feel that they aren’t alone in their struggles to find peace of mind.

Experts say: ‘We think over 40,000 thoughts per day’. Many of these rogue thoughts are not helping us to remain calm and focused, they are edging us towards worry and anxiety, directly effecting our performance.

In my own self-development, over the last 20 years I have sought out some of the best coaches and mentors I could find. There is a plethora of different coaches and mentors who work to help people conquer their recurring problems.

Over the years, and to this day, I still work through my own problems with coaches, mentors, hypnotists and NLP practitioners when I feel the need. I believe in life being one of continual development and always strive to be better at everything that I do.

Over the last 7 years I have managed to interview over 250 people. All have been at the top of their game and many left clues to their success and their sources of happiness.

With all the pressure and anxiety in the current working environment, many are troubled by their “inner imposter”. Lots of people feel they aren’t good enough. They feel that they won’t be successful and that they’ll be judged as being incapable by their peers.
