Baidu has unveiled Ernie Bot, its equivalent of ChatGPT
The Chinese public has been hungry for a ChatGPT alternative; both OpenAI and the Chinese government have barred individuals in China from using the American chatbot.
Chinese tech giant Baidu has unveiled its large language model, Ernie Bot, as a competitor to OpenAI’s ChatGPT. The CEO, Robin Li, demonstrated the chatbot’s capabilities in solving math problems, writing marketing copy, answering Chinese literature questions, and generating multimedia responses. While Ernie Bot excels in tasks specific to Chinese culture, its multimodal output feature distinguishes it from ChatGPT and GPT-4. However, post-launch testing by a Chinese publication failed to reproduce the video generation aspect showcased in the demo.
Ernie Bot is currently available only to a select group of Chinese creators, with companies able to apply for API access. Baidu has not disclosed whether the technology will be available to consumers or when it will be integrated into other products. The release felt rushed compared to ChatGPT and GPT-4, and Baidu’s stock price slipped 6.4% on launch day. Despite imperfections, Li believes Ernie Bot will impact every company by shortening the distance between them and their customers.
Before Ernie Bot’s launch, 650 companies had already signed up, with 30,000+ others applying for API access post-launch. Firms like Lenovo, Trip.com, and Chinese automakers show interest. Stay tuned for partnership details as Baidu rolls out the API.
The need to have a fully functioning Chat Bot interface became table stakes in search and will also become part of life, the opportunities for innovation are endless when you think of text to speech, speech to text, image creation, recognition etc…
