Digging deeper into this topic and our beliefs about ourselves, I realized that we are sitting on beliefs about ourselves from when we were children and young adults. So if you want to learn more about yourself and these “I am statements” then sit down the next time you feel a negative thought and make a list of these “I am statements” and you won’t believe what you discover. These, more often than not, negative statements sit behind our confidence or, on occasion, overconfidence.
According to Kim-Adele and the research she has done into the subject:
- We create these statements by the age of 7
- We enforce them by the time we are 14 years old
- We embed them by the time we reach 21 years old
This does not mean we have to agree with these beliefs, and it does not mean we cannot change them. Like anything in life, this does take some time, though. Learning new skills takes time and effort and perhaps may push you out of your comfort zone.
