In the summer of 2018 Sir Andrew Strauss, former England captain did not pick up a bat.  His wife, Ruth, had been diagnosed with the inoperable form of lung cancer that attacks non-smokers and was given just a year to live.

Ruth died on December 29th last year; she was 46 years old and mother to two children, now aged 11 and 14.

In her memory, Sir Andrew has launched The Ruth Strauss Foundation to:

  • Provide emotional, psychological and wellbeing support to patients and their families going through a similar experience.
  • Fund research into rare lung cancers.

“The idea of setting up the foundation came up with Ruth in the last few months of her life.  Ruth desperately wanted to help those affected by this terrible disease and she had a very strong sense of charity – in the broadest sense – of helping others less fortunate than ourselves”.
