#140: Reflecting on Life, Loss, and Finding Wisdom in Unexpected Places

Whilst most of the people I know who work in large corporations are taking their summer leave, the world has been going a bit crazy!?

Hold on, I’m not going to trigger your outrage…I am not even going to talk about the latest search wars or Musk moving into search.

The world is already a crazy place, so I am also taking some time out and reviewing the archives from the last 10 years of recording interviews and digging out some real gems. During lockdown we did a number of great interviews with Stanley Tucci, Michael Tobin OBE and other public figures. They shared so much value that I decided to dig into them and put some of their wisdom into my new book, which will be available by 2025.

This week was a real eye opener for me. I went with my amazing brother Jacques to visit our Dad. He reached 91 years old this July and is becoming extremely forgetful, but fortunately for us he has regained his sense of humour.

We noticed he had got frustrated with his shoelaces and had cut them with some scissors. Jacques said we will work on a solution.

Dad said “Which leg do you want to cut off!?” Which was hilarious.

After a trip around Chichester to numerous shops we had some special stretchy running laces and with a little adaptation Jacques came up with a solution. We still think Dad is superman so it’s painful to see. He is an MIT educated industrial engineer who now can’t work out his shoelaces or remember much in the short term, fortunately he imparted much of his business knowledge to my brother and I over the years. In the 1980s he was Britain’s leading business management expert and had over 2500 Post Grad students alongside running the wine business.

Life is a painful experience at times and getting old is certainly one of the things that we are afraid of as we get older. Many are touched by grief and whilst the pain and regret doesn’t go away you move beyond it to focus on the good memories instead. Remembering the saying “The little things become the big things.” Remembering the afternoon teas we used to have with Mum…oh how beautifully British.

Life is often a mess and this is why we need to find a mentor and a coach so we can fast track our goals, deal with all life throws at us and achieve things at light speed. If you have never had a mentor or a coach I strongly suggest you take the time to find one as it is truly life changing.

Over the last few years I have been working alongside my mentor business leader Steven J Manning and it has been transformational. He developed much of the data led marketing concepts being used today and has over 47 Billion USD in commerce under his belt.

Wasting time over the summer isn’t a bad thing checkout the conversation I had with Steven about that here:
